What usually goes wrong
The problems we see, and how we fix them
Crumbling mortar
Freeze-thaw takes mortar joints apart. Once the joints go, the stack soaks up water like a sponge.
The fixWe rake out the failed joints and repoint in a mix that suits the brick or stone.
Damp around the breast
Damp patches beside a chimney breast usually mean failed flashing or flaunching, not rising damp.
The fixWe renew the lead and flaunching so the junction between stack and roof is watertight.
Leaning or spalled stacks
A stack past saving is a safety issue in high wind.
The fixWhere a rebuild is the honest answer we take it down and rebuild it, or reduce and cap a stack no longer in use.
